I really like that poem too. and the photos. It all seems best in black and white. 🙂 You are very talented. I think that I read a fiction book that had a submarine attacking a fort on the Oregon coast during WWII. Clive Cussler??? The name of the book will probably come to me in the middle of the night and wake me up. Thanks for sharing.

A Japanese sub attacked Battery Russell in June of 1942. They didn’t do much damage. The fort went immediately into blackout and didn’t return fire, so the sub had no specific target to aim for. My mom grew up near the fort. She was part of the Civil Air Patrol, and and would pull shifts in a lookout tower at the beach, watching for enemy aircraft. The base also hosted several dances that she and her friends attended.

Having primary sources for information is awesome, Maggie. I imagine your interpretive talks as a ranger at Fort Stevens were a lot of fun to hear… hum… just like your blog! Battery Russell is an interesting place for photos. Next time, I must be on the alert for spirits lurking about.

I never did any interpretive talks. Mostly cleaning pit toilets, mowing campsites and trying to get dozens of drunk campers from summer softball tournaments to pipe down at 2 am.

Actually it was the most fun job I ever had. I also got to do a lot of interesting things, and spend a lot of time outdoors, on trails, at the beach…
