Weekend Coffee Share (11/20/2016)

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that the Accidental DIYer has struck again. The last time I suffered this affliction, my unsuspecting living room floor went from this:

to this:

and ultimately to this:

It’s still not a completed project, as the hardwood floor needs sanding and refinishing, but that’s for another day.

This week, what started out as a plan to repaint my kitchen cupboards, turned from this:

to this:

So now my little paint project has escalated to a demolition of the area around my stove, cutting down the shelving to accommodate a new range hood, putting up new backing on the wall behind the stove, rebuilding cupboards on either side of the range hood, lining the old cupboards with wood veneer, cutting cupboard doors down to new size and hanging them, installing new counter tops (I’m thinking of trying to make my own concrete counter tops)… Oh, and some painting.

I don’t know how this happens, other than to say that my toolbox is bigger than my common sense.

If we were having coffee, I would find some polite way to cut our visit short so I could get at my project. I’ve got to figure out how to move the stove away from the wall. It’s so heavy I can’t budge it at all. I’m sure I’ll come up with something. It may involve redoing the flooring.

Oh, boy. Here we go again.

Oh my – looks like quite a project you have going on there! At our old apartment, which we rented, the stove had wheels under, so it was really easy to move it out of it’s space. For example to clean all the crumbs that had accumulated under it.. Sounds like your stove has no such thing 😦

  2. Happy renovating. Hope you show us the finished product some time. The floor looks fantastic even if it isn’t finished. Okay — go and get on with it.

Well, not stanzas but entertaining. Those round plastic glider things work well for moving the stove. We used them for all the furniture and appliances. Save you from re-doing the floor. 🙂 Oh, I made laminates when I was working. Much easier to work with than concrete. Good Luck!

I ended up prying up each leg and sliding a thin piece of cardboard underneath. Worked well. I looked at laminate stuff online at Home Depot. Don’t know anything about it, but the stuff I saw there just looked kind of cheap. I’ll check it out when I’m at a store again.

Maggie, you’re doing a phenomenal job and I’m getting tired just reading about you’re project. The floor boards look sensational and it’s funny but I have some mad idea about pulled along the floorboards on a sack. Mum and her siblings used to do that and her sister got a huge splinter in head. They didn’t want to get into trouble and said nothing until another sister blabbed and she was off to hospital. They gave her a tetanus injection and she had an allergic reaction and almost died. I guess the moral of the story is not to go sliding around on the floorboards.
Hope you have a great week!

Maggie, the floor looks great! I am a DIYer too, and well, let’s just say that my husband has hidden the toolbox for the time being. I do manage the smaller projects easily though, with the basic tools. And by the way, I would bring the coffee when I come visit! ❤️ along with a meal you can put in the fridge while you work! That would be greatly appreciated, as my counter top is so full of stuff I’ve had to move around, that I can’t even get to the coffee maker; and my stove is now sitting in the middle of the kitchen. Us DIYers have to stick together!

That hardwood floor is a major upgrade, and worth the effort. I look forward to seeing the end result. Thanks for coffee this week.
