Just to verify… Found this on Oregon Hiker.org:
The Cathedral Tree is a large Sitka spruce in on a forested hillside above Astoria. The tree is purported to be over 300 years old. It is 8 1/2 feet in diameter, 27 1/2 feet in circumference, and over 200 feet high. The buttress-like roots, which provide a shelter for many a visitor, come from the fact that the tree sprouted from a large nurse log which has since rotted away.
A December 2007 windstorm wrought havoc in the Astoria area and toppled many of the trees around the Cathedral which, however, remained standing.

Oh, cool!! Thanks for sharing this. Even though I grew up in the Warrenton-Astoria area, I hadn’t heard of this tree until last year when I stayed in Astoria a couple of days to play tourist and take photos.
