that voice

Like an itch in my psyche,
your insults taunt me.
In truth, am I that abhorrent?

Niggling accusations,
crippling judgments,
peripheral flashes of
forgotten shame…

That and more, you say.
We’ve only scratched the surface.

I really hate the sound of
my own voice.

So sad and desperate. You certainly are very good at at engaging emotions.

That makes me think it is a good thing an itch is only on the surface. We don’t have to go below the surface.

How is it that one negative can override all the positives? Old judgments still nag after so many years?

That last line hurts and brings in the punches of this negative self talk ~

  6. So intriguing. I am interpreting this as that negative inner voice that promotes self-doubt (and which I would personally like to excise). Well done!

oh this is a disturbing poem….and yes….the words of others can go so deep into our psyche. Insults, small negative digs….and sometimes satirical remarks that are meant to be funny but dig…all hard to let bounce off of us or answer back in a positive self-affirming way. A message to all of us….to mind our tongues.

  11. some things cuts well below the surface of the seemingly simple “bite” …. and it’s like trying to exorcise demons ….
it’s never pleasant to be on the receiving end, or even, to realize, that we too have offered this to someone else,
interesting interpretation of the “itch” … definitely speaks volumes and carries the weight of implications …

This is so poignant .. our mind often recalls hurtful things done to us in the past/present more than the good. It nags us like an itch.

You definitely moved many with this. Your muse is busy. 🙂

We are so hard on ourselves and that self-talk is destructive, even fatal for some. I very much enjoyed this quadrille with the twist at the end.

My shrink told me I can be nicer to myself and give myself a break. That advice was worth every penny. Your poem was less expensive, thank you! 😊
