Season’s Greeting

Spring came early.

Daffodils sent up blunt shoots.

Yellow buds perched atop short stalks.

Pushing right through autumn’s detritus,

spring defied winter’s chilly winds.

But winter sent a heavy-handed greeting:

a caress of snow, an icy kiss of welcome

and – most likely –

of goodbye.

I’ve been wondering how many flowers and plants this snow may have kissed goodbye. I guess we will find out next month (maybe). 😀

That icy kiss and good-bye. Well said.
Those daffodils were really up, too. Nothing like that here yet.

Uncertain situation for eager flowers. Might all work out Maggie…

An “an icy kiss of welcome” is a great combination of words. A possibly fatal greeting.

I love the fine detail of the daffodils in the first stanza, Maggie, and felt a twinge of sadness in the second stanza – dashed hope.

Ah kindred souls are we in this prompt! That chilling kiss of winter after a few balmy days tempt the crocus and daffodils to peek through the still cold earth and then…..POW! Winter gives her last slam! Yep — I’ve often looked at those early crocus and hoped they’d have the staying power to last through winter’s surprise snow that was predicted to come. You’ve described reality here! 🙂
